The Territory Of Joy :
INDIA is a churning democracy of troubles and charms of more than a billion people
and about 70% of the population is poor and has to struggle to make a living, a large portion of this poor population has migrated to large cities, like Mumbai ,in search of better prospects.
The aspect of the 'poor enjoying themselves' has been rarely documented , maybe perhaps because of their less dramatic nature, such visuals are less likely to find a publication and are commercially nonviable. On the other hand there are scores of avenues to depict the lifestyles of the rich and their numerous indulgences like golf , yachting and the like.
HOW do the poor enjoy? ....How much effort and time do they invest in entertainment? ....When they find it difficult to make ends meet how much money do they spend on fun and leisure? ....What makes them part with their already scarce money on entertainment? ....Do they all look at avenues that are free for enjoyment?.... What are their dreams and aspirations so revealed?........ . What do they do to recharge and prepare themselves to face their harsh realities?......
This photo essay tries to address some of these questions and in doing so will help us understand Poverty and the Poor in a fresh context.
There are many such activities like going to Bollywood movies in cheap theatres, going to free wrestling matches, listening to Bollywood songs, visiting prostitutes, playing cards, etc. that the poor engage in their free time. This project is an attempt to understand how they prepare themselves to face their harsh realities.
This photo essay explores the different manifestations of 'poverty' in the realms of the moment and the Territory of Joy. The overarching aim of the project is to spark thinking and debate among a diverse audience about how such visual representations of 'poor people' influence our perceptions, shape policies, and catalyse action.
